5 Steps to Boost Your Career in 2018

Are you thinking of starting an apprenticeship in 2018 or are you currently undertaking one now? Apprenticeships are a great way to get experience on-the-job while you get paid and are a foot in the door to the career you want. That’s pretty awesome.

As with any job, some apprentices will excel in their position while others won’t do as well as they hope for. Why is that? It can be a little daunting going from school or unemployment straight into the workforce. Suddenly there is a lot expected of you and it can take time to settle into a new position with people you have probably never met before.

The attitude you bring to the job makes a big difference to whether or not you do well. Out in the workforce, people like to work alongside people who are friendly and easy to get along with and those who take pride in their work. It’s super important to make the effort to be someone that people enjoy working with. Beyond that, there are loads of extra things you can do to really shine in your role.

We’ve put together a quick guide to making the most of your apprenticeship and boost your career in 2018.

1. Set goals

Be that go-getter who sets goals for yourself. Brainstorm what you want to achieve by the end of the year, like what you want to learn and what skills you want to have. Then set about achieving these things. In the workforce, it’s ultimately up to you to become the best version of yourself.

2. Make an effort to grow your profile

Growing your internal profile within the company is a great move. Making sure you get to know all the staff in the company is a great idea. Remembering their names and asking them how they are will win you big points too. Volunteer your time where possible and speak with your colleagues and advisor as often as you can.

3. Exceed expectations

Make the effort to go above and beyond what’s expected of you. Putting extra effort into everything you do will not go unnoticed and will help you to open up your career prospects within the company. Your employer will come to know they can depend upon you.

4. Talk to your manager

Regularly set time aside to meet with your supervisor to find out how you’re performing. Not only will this give them the impression that your keen to do well and that you care about your position but you will gain an understanding of how to improve and you may also get insight into the general operations of the company while you’re there.

5. Network

Generally becoming more involved in the industry you’re working in is a great way to boost your career. Make sure you attend training events or extra curricular meetings and activities. Meet new people in your industry and start forming your career network. There’s no time like the present.
